Should It Be Illegal to Carry My Pocket Knife?

For self defense purposes a pocket knife or dagger may be more of a deterrent rather than a stabbing or slashing implement. When it comes to knife fights, trust me, they are to be avoided at all costs. Hence the question may be asked; “what is the best means for personal self defense when being confronted by an attacker while out?” If legislation is passed outlawing the carriage of all pocket knives, then it would appear that your keys, pens, pencils, cigarette lighters, tire irons or pepper spray may be your only options if you can’t acquire a concealed weapons permit. Don’t forget you always have punches, kicks and bites (just to name a few) at your disposal. Furthermore, I do believe that the more tricks and/or hardware you have in your personal arsenal, the better prepared you may be when facing various challenges. After all, survival is natures first basic law.

I’ve noticed recently that there have been some discussion about certain states making the carriage of pocket knives illegal. Considering the amount of gun violence in our country that far outweigh the number of pocket knife violence, this type of legislation appears detrimental, or perhaps even moot. Carrying firearms on your person without a permit is illegal all across the entire country. However, this does not stop criminals from being criminals. As a matter of fact, the majority of gun crime occurs from those owning firearms illegally. As much as I am in favor of strict gun control I don’t see how making the carriage of a 3 inch pocket knife illegal is going to solve much. Therefore, it is my opinion that no matter what weapon is outlawed for carrying purposes, the criminals will continue behaving badly.

It’s true that it is instinctive for all creatures to seek and desire self-preservation. However, that shouldn’t suggest that you are obligated to eliminate all possible adversaries that you deem disposable. Survival of the fittest is a remarkable concept proposed by Charles Darwin. But let’s face it, having strong moral values and a good sense to know when and where to pick your battles is always key to out-maneuvering any negative situation. Like the great Chinese tactician Sun Tzu mentions in his acclaimed book The Art of War, all confrontation which can be life threatening should be avoided. But there is nothing like the reassurance of knowing you have back up and don’t have to use it. Although it may give you an inflated sense of self-esteem.

A pocket knife is a useful tool. With the various types in the world today there are so many ways it can be used much like any other tool. Is it beneficial to outlaw the carriage of a hammer? Some might argue “yes” if an outbreak of hammer related crimes were to suddenly escalate. It is understandable how the registration of a concealed weapon is necessary under most circumstances. But does a fisherman have to register his/her 6 inch filleting knife or scaling knife when going on a fishing trip? How can a pocket knife pose that much of a threat to the public?

As you are aware, some people carry a pocket knife just for practice and not just for self defense. Honing your skills is a great way to keep one occupied. After talking with numerous people who collect daggers and swords, it’s clear that they admire their design, the quality or just plain ole like them. Practicing with your pocket knife is always useful especially for the avid outdoor sportsmen.
